Smithers

Set against the backdrop of the Hudson Bay Mountain and the vistas of the Babine & Telkwa Mountain ranges, the quaint little town of Smithers, is nestled in the picturesque Bulkley Valley.  The surrounding mountains and valleys are dominated by forests.

To add to its authentic alpine charm, the town has adopted an ‘alpine theme’. Main Street is lined with red brick sidewalks and alpine style rooflines on buildings and shops. Smithers is a vibrant community comprised of Wet’suwet’en First Nations, second & third generations of European settlers (many Dutch & Swiss), along with new residents from all over the globe.

You will find outstanding outdoor recreational activities during all phases of the year, including skiing, snowmobiling, horse-back riding, hiking, golfing, kayaking, fishing, and so much more.  Surrounded by mountains, dotted with lakes and divided by rivers and streams the Bulkley Valley wants to be explored. The Bulkley River is a major tourist destination for anglers targeting wild steelhead. The history of the prospectors can be found in the mountains in old mines and artifacts.

Smithers is a hub for the entire Bulkley Valley and because of this, it offers many more amenities than you would normally see in a town of this size. Smithers boasts of being the home to Grammy Award winner Alex Cuba, and to retired NHL hockey player, Olympic and World champion Dan Hamhuis.  The main industries are forestry, logging, and tourism.

Bulkley Valley District Hospital in Smithers provides X-ray, Mammography, Ultrasound, a 25 bed acute care ward, and a 24 Hour ER.  Other supports include Long-term & Extended care, Home & Community Care, Public & Mental Health & Addictions services, Assisted Living, & Hospice.
