Nestled at the end of the Douglas Channel, a 140 km fjord along the Alaska-Vancouver “Inside Passage”, Kitimat’s beautiful setting provides the backdrop for a unique mix of successful industry and a natural outdoor lifestyle.  Kitimat is a fun & friendly, family-oriented community based in the heart of the Northern BC wilderness.

The Kitimat River and nearby ocean channels are ideal for a variety of water sports and exciting adventures, including freshwater and saltwater fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boating and visiting hot springs.  Similarly, the area’s untouched lands, forests and peaks entice and fully accommodate hiking, rock climbing, ATVing, snowmobiling, guide outfitting, cross country skiing and much more.  The town has access to all the necessary amenities and more than enough recreational facilities.  In addition, there are many green spaces and meandering walkways throughout the community. Kitimat has an industry-based economy.  A planned city, it was originally created in the 1950’s to accommodate the building and operations of a massive hydroelectric project and aluminum smelter in the area.  Rio Tinto Alcan is still the largest employer in town.  The Kitimat port sees large ships travelling back and forth the Douglas channel to the Pacific Ocean, and the LNG project is currently in development.

Kitimat is a proud community and home of the Haisla Nation.  Proud of its natural surroundings, and proud of the fact that the various cultural communities that live there get along well, and work together to make the community the best place it can be.

Kitimat General Hospital and Health Centre (KGH) is a Level 4 trauma centre providing medical services to the community.  These services include X-ray, Ultrasound, Bone Densitometry, multi-level & acute care ward.  There are three medical clinics that provide Primary Care to the community.
