Accreditation: This program has been certified by The College of Family Physicians of Canada and the British Columbia Chapter for up to 21 Group Learning credits.

Target Audience: This course is designed for physicians and other healthcare professionals who work or recreate in the outdoors, far from the assistance of the 911 EMS systems, so they may treat people in an austere environment with a minimum of equipment. 

Instructor: Jim Ongena, who has been teaching Wilderness Medicine Courses throughout Canada & U.S.A. for more than 40 years. He is considered the pioneer of Wilderness First Aid in Canada.

Learning Objectives:
After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to manage medical emergencies in a wilderness environment with minimal equipment.
  • Explain how to shelter & protect yourself and your patients in severe conditions.
  • Feel more confident moving injured people on complex terrain.
  • Understand the legal issues of treating people in the wilderness. 

Topics:

DAY 1 – introduction (scope of this course), liability concerns, anatomy & physiology, body surveys – primary, secondary and vitals, cold injuries, patient moving, soft tissue injuries, shock, head injuries, improvised carries.

DAY 2 – review Day 1, drowning, fractures, dislocations, sprains, review CPR & obstructed airways, spinals, lightning, snakes, spiders and other nuisances, outdoor simulation.

DAY 3 – review Day 2, drugs, chest injuries, burns, heart attacks, strokes, first-aid kits and the major simulation.
